Stephen Hawking, brilliant author of many works in theoretical physics including A Brief History of Time, Black Holes and more was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) while a student at Oxford University.

 

Through our work with Milwaukee County departments we provide services that make County programs, services, and facilities accessible to people with disabilities.

 

We make information accessible through:

Sign language interpreting,

Providing auditory listening devices,

Producing materials in alternative formats,

Publishing Handy-NEWS & NOTES newsletter (follow Handy-NEWS & NOTES on Twitter),

And providing telephone information and referral services.

 

We support employment for people with disabilities by:

Providing workplace accommodations for Milwaukee County employees with disabilities,

Making employment testing accommodations available to job applicants with disabilities,

Referring individuals to community-based employment programs.

 

We support accessible recreation for people with disabilities by:

Operating the Wil-O-Way Summer Camp program,

Offering year-round recreation through the Wil-O-Way centers located in Grant and Underwood parks,

Promoting recreation programs supported by other community agencies,

Distributing tickets to the Admirals, Brewers, Bucks, and Wave to members of the Wil-O-Way Key Card program (Click Here For An Application) .

We assist people to receive transportation services provided through Milwaukee County Transit, Transit Plus, and the Department on Aging.

 

We help remove barriers through:

Reviewing architectural plans to make buildings more accessible,

Distributing a newsletter promoting awareness of the Americans with Disabilities Act,

Reviewing departmental procedures and recommend alternatives that support the inclusion of people with disabilities.

 

We receive guidance through:

The Milwaukee County Commission for Persons with Disabilities,

Review of consumer feedback,

And by participating in community activities and organizations.
