December 2005 Bay View Compass Editorial
Dear Bay View Compass Readers,
I'd like to wish you and your families a very Happy Holidays. I'd also like to take this opportunity to let you know of some great winter activities Milwaukee County has available for you in our parks system.
The Milwaukee County Parks System offers toboggan sliding at Whitnall Park with a toboggan run including an iced track. The hours for the slide are: Thursday, 4-8pm; Saturday, 10-8pm; and Sunday 10-5pm. Toboggan rentals are $6.00 an hour with unlimited rides. You are able to sled in many of the county parks including Humboldt which offers great hills especially for sledding. You are also able to ice fish in the lagoons and ponds at Humboldt and other parks throughout the county. However, lakes, ponds, and lagoons are not yet ready safe to go on and the Milwaukee Parks Department will issue a release when they are ready. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources determines fishing regulations. There will also be a free ice fishing clinic for children 15 and under on February 4th, 2006 at Humboldt and Wilson Parks from 9am-2pm.
A favorite winter activity of many is ice skating. There is free outdoor ice skating downtown at the Slice of Ice in Red Arrow Park. The 2005-2006 Season has begun and you may bring your own skates or purchase rentals for $4.00. The rink is located at 920 N. Water St. and is open daily starting at 11:00am and open until 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. If you prefer staying indoors to ice skate, Wilson Park located at 4001 S. 20th St. and has a large arena for ice skating and playing hockey. Skate rental is $2.00 and skating is $5.50 for ages 15-59, otherwise discounts apply. Cross-Country Skiing is available throughout the winter; however, the trails are not yet groomed this year, but will be as soon as snowfall permits. Whitnall Park at 6751 S. 92nd St. offers a lot of open space and great scenery.
"Twas the Night Before Christmas" is on show now through January 2 at our Milwaukee County Domes. This includes beautiful scenes from the floral show dome. In addition to this exhibit, "Santa's Balloon Wonderland at the Domes" will also be on display. This is Wisconsin's largest balloon walk-through art exhibition. It includes over 37,000 balloons.
Again, I wish you all a great Holiday season and a Happy New Year!! If you have any questions or comments, as always, feel free to contact my office at 278-4232.
Sincerely,
Marina Dimitrijevic
