April 2006 Bay View Compass Editorial

Dear Bay View Compass Readers,

The month of April is here and spring has officially begun. We will also be celebrating Earth Day this month by creating awareness about our environment and inviting everyone to join in some spring cleaning.

I have been working with County Board staff on developing an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Plan for Milwaukee County.  Milwaukee County currently owns over 600 buildings, which are the homes for the vast array of services provided by the county.  Yet, many of these homes are older and not quite as energy efficient as they could be.  An important component of this plan is that Milwaukee County will begin performance contracting in these county-owned buildings. Energy Performance Contracting is a construction method that allows a facility to complete energy-saving improvements within an existing budget by financing them with money saved through reduced utility expenditures.  The Parks, Energy, and Environment Committee has just approved a promising pilot program for the Milwaukee County Zoo and the three Milwaukee County Indoor Pools.  Enacting these energy efficient measures will benefit the environment by consuming less energy, as well as save on energy expenses in Milwaukee County's operating budget, resulting in a better return on your tax investment for our community.

Earth Day is April 22nd and we can get involved in many different activities to help make our neighborhood a cleaner and safer place to live in. Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful is co-sponsoring two cleanups in April. The first cleanup, hosted by the Bay View Neighborhood Association will be on April 22nd from 9:00 am-noon. Registration begins at 8:30 am at Immaculate Conception Church at 1023 E. Russell Ave. In addition, the South Shore Park Watch will be hosting a park and beach cleanup from 9:00 am-noon on Saturday, April 29th. Registration will take place in front of South Shore Park Pavilion at 9:00 am.

On April 22nd, the Friends of Milwaukee's Rivers will be hosting the KK River cleanup starting at 9:00 am at Chase Ave. near Rosedale. Parking will be available at UMOS.

Lastly, Thursday April 27th is the South Shore Park Watch's Earth Day Celebration at the South Shore Pavilion from 9:00 am-1:00 pm. School children can come and learn about different environmental issues and responsibilities, take a tree walk, and learn about different animals. I'd like to congratulate the South Shore Park Watch on its 10th anniversary of hosting this great educational event. Thank you to all the members and volunteers and a special thank you to Bea Reinders who really makes sure this event takes place each year! Happy Earth Day, and as always, please feel free to contact my office with any questions or comments you may have, at 278-4232.

Sincerely,

Supervisor Marina Dimitrijevic
