Dear Bay View Compass Readers,Spring is approaching fast and our wonderful Milwaukee County Golf Courses are officially open for business. I hope you have the chance to take advantage of some great golfing deals in April. This past month we broke ground on an important Milwaukee County Parks project in South Shore Park. On March 15, elected officials as well as community members all celebrated the official groundbreaking ceremony for the South Shore shoreline protection and bike trail reconstruction projects. The first phase of construction work will focus on the shoreline revetment to help prevent further erosion in the area. Once this phase is finished, reconstruction of the bike trail will follow. Neighbors in the area may see trucks carrying large stones for the shoreline protection project and there will also be minimal beach access restrictions throughout the duration of the project. The estimated timeline for the completion of these projects is this August. At the March County Board Meeting we received a veto of minimum wage legislation from County Executive Walker. I co-sponsored this legislation which urged the State to raise the State's minimum wage rate to $6.50 an hour by the end of October 2005. Fortunately, the County Board was able to override Scott Walker's veto of the recommendation to increase the minimum wage, by a vote of 16-3. At this meeting the County Board also voted 18-1 to designate the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department as the entity to continue serving Milwaukee County's cellular 911 phone calls. Milwaukee County already provides the entire county with this service and will also be able to offer all county residents county-wide representation, whereas the City could not do the same.
