Supervisor Jim "Luigi" Schmitt is currently serving his third full term on the Milwaukee County Board. He was elected in a special election on December 8, 1998 and re-elected in 2000, 2004 and 2008. The 19th District encompasses two-thirds of Wauwatosa, seven wards in West Allis, two wards in the City of Milwaukee, and the Village of West Milwaukee.
 
As Chairman of the Intergovernmental Relations Committee, Supervisor Schmitt is working with State Legislators to reduce state mandates and limit the burden on Milwaukee County property tax payers.  He is also working with the Department of Transportation on plans to reconstruct the Zoo Interchange.  Supervisor Schmitt also serves on the Personnel Committee and the Finance and Audit Committee, where he helps craft the annual County Budget and balance the need for services with the desire to keep taxes in line.  Supervisor Schmitt is particularly active on issues relating to the Milwaukee County Grounds in Wauwatosa, including the Behavioral Health Division Mental Health Complex and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus proposed for the area near the Eschweiler buildings.   He successfully worked with the Department of Natural Resources to bring a forestry demonstration center to the County Grounds, while at the same time working with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District on the construction of the necessary detention basin on the County Grounds.
 
For a number of years, he has served on the Board of Directors for the Milwaukee County Historical Society, the Milwaukee County Research Park Board and more recently on the Milwaukee County Public Museum Board.  Before he was elected to public office, Supervisor Schmitt spent 28 years as a teacher, coach and administrator at Marquette University High School in Milwaukee.  He currently enjoys teaching evening adult classes in American Government at Upper Iowa University.
 
Active in his community, Supervisor Schmitt served on the Wauwatosa Millennium Committee and served as Chairman of the New Year's Eve Afternoon Community Celebration at Hart Park Pavilion. He is also a member of Christ King Parish in Wauwatosa, the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce, the West Allis-West Milwaukee Chamber of Commerce, and the Pasadena Neighborhood Association. He holds a Bachelor degree in political science from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN and a Master's degree in political science from UW-Madison.

Supervisor Schmitt is a lifelong county resident.  He is married to Sue and they have four adult children.
